The holiday season is a time for joy, celebration, and family. However, it can also be a time of stress, overeating, and neglect of fitness routines. To maintain your health and well-being during this busy time it's imperative that you practice self care and get to the CrossFit gym!
No matter what your fitness level getting a workout in reduces stress, improves focus and keeps your body moving, which has been shown to increase longevity.
Let's make sure those workouts don't fall to the wayside this holiday season. Keep reading for three tips to stay on track and help you get to the gym this holiday season, even when it seems impossible.
Step #1 - Set Realistic Expectations
Of course would all like to maintain our current workout schedule AND go to all the events and parties we are invited to. But if we are thinking about things realistically, we know that just isn't possible.
Here are some tips for setting realistic expectations for attending the CrossFit gym during the holidays:
- Take the time to put EVERYTHING you can into your calendar. Kids social events, work events, deadlines, games and practices.
- After all the events are loaded into your calendar do a reflection of how busy you are going to be.
- Write down a minimum acceptable times to workout during the week and the desired amount of times to workout in a week.
- From there - you can move to step two.
Tip #2 - Schedule Your Workouts
- Treat Workouts Like Appointments: Schedule your workouts in your calendar just like any other important appointment. For some reason we are ok blowing ourselves off, but we place priority to other people or appointments. Remember, if the captain of the ship goes down, the entire ship is going down. Place priority on your own well being so you can help take care of others.
- Early Bird Gets the Worm: Consider morning workouts to get them out of the way before the day gets hectic.
- Be Flexible: If your schedule changes, be flexible and find alternative workout times. Things don't always go as planned. Being flexible is important because even the best laid plans sometimes fall through.
- Check out your CrossFit gyms schedule and know which classes you can attend in the event the one you planned to go to isn't possible. Always having a back up plan is crucial.
- Don't Forget Drive Time: When scheduling your workouts, don't forget to put on your calendar the amount of time it takes to drive to and from the gym. Many people forget this step and they end up running late and are overwhelmed because and stressed out because of it.
Tip #3 - Find A Workout Buddy
You are 65% more likely to work towards a goal when you commit verbally to someone else what your plan is. Additionally, having an accountability partner can significantly boost your motivation and commitment to your workout routine.
Here are some major benefits:
- Increased Motivation: Knowing that someone is counting on you to show up can be a powerful motivator. Your partner can provide encouragement, push you to your limits, and celebrate your successes.
- Enhanced Consistency: Regular check-ins with your buddy can help you stay on track and avoid skipping workouts. You'll be less likely to skip a session if you know you'll have to explain yourself to someone.
- Set a class time you both can attend and hold each other accountable to getting there.
- Shared Experiences: Working out with a partner can make the experience more enjoyable. You can share tips, advice, and even friendly competition, which can make your workouts more fun and engaging.
- Reduced Risk of Burnout: By having someone to share the experience with, you can reduce the risk of boredom and burnout.
- Improved Mental Health: Social interaction and support can have a positive impact on mental health. Working out with a friend can reduce stress, anxiety, and depression.
If you already have a workout partner to go to the CrossFit gym with in mind, call them up! Get the ball rolling. If you don't have someone in mind, next time you are at the gym ask your CrossFit coach if they may have someone they can think of that would be a good fit. You can even take it upon yourself and mention something in the gym's private Facebook group or social app.
